Abolition of Slave Trade Missing Value
Great Britain added 21 May 2007
A quantity of 1st class stamps from the Cartor-printed Abolition of the Slave Trade issue released 22 March 2007 have been discovered missing gold by a collector in Kent. The error was spotted by a customer who purchased a block of 16 and noticed several stamps within the block missing the value. It’s unknown exactly how many stamps from the block are affected and it’s too early to know if any other examples exist – however, Stanley Gibbons have confirmed they’ve purchased six affected stamps from the original find to place in their 14 June 2007 auction.
Two first class stamps from the series exist – one depicting William Wilberforce, the other showing Olaudah Equiano. Both designs were printed side by side in panes of 30 with four panes per sheet. Gold is used for the Queen’s head and value. It appears as though the error only causes the loss of the denomination, but the Queen’s head shows a shade difference suggesting an underlay colour was used. It’s equally possible a weak printing of gold caused the loss of the value, but was sufficient for the Queen’s head.
